Among the manuscripts included in this exhibition are writings by Malthus and Alfred Russel Wallace - who greatly influenced Darwin's work.
The Arc Caddo-Bossier Foundation is excited to share with our community the wonderful talents and abilities of people with disabilities. This year The Arc Foundation along with Shreveport Regional Arts Council will present an art exhibition from January 19th until February 18th in artspace, located in Downtown Shreveport. The exhibition will feature the artworks of the following artists:Lynette Fontenot, Lafayette, LANever one to let anything stop her, Lynette discovered with the help of her friend Heather Moran that she can use her head to paint. Born with cerebral palsy, Lynette is unable to use her hands, uses a wheelchair and uses a computer to speak. With painting as a new means to express herself, she now sees the world from a different prospective. She enjoys painting flowers and landscapes. As an honor graduate of Basile High School at the age of 17, Lynette went on to earn an associate degree in general studies from LSU in Eunice. She is a wife, an advocate for individuals with disabilities, and a motivational speaker. Mike Hilburn, Springhill, LAMike's work is significant and award winning. In the early 90's he was commissioned to create a painting for The Arc of Louisiana showing people coming to Baton Rouge for a conference, and the prints were sold to raise funds for The Arc. Mike's art teacher, Ms. Burtie Touchstone Smith has worked with him for over 25 years. His work has hung in the Louisiana Governor's Office during the Foster Administration and at the Governor's Mansion during the Blanco Administration. Mike was born with cerebral palsy, uses a wheelchair, and paints with his left foot. Many of his paintings are for sale. Harry Castor, Shreveport, LAHarry is a self-taught artist. His favorite medium to paint in is oil. He is mostly inspired by prominent Americans of African American heritage. In the 80's, Harry worked in a laundry/uniform cleaning plant. The plant utilized large three ton vats for laundering, during a transfer of a vat, Harry's thumb, index and middle fingers were severed from his hand, leaving on the ring and little fingers. To aid in his physical therapy for his hand, Harry started painting with the two remaining fingers. Harry's work is characterized by bold, determined colors. His portraits are bust like, in that he focuses on the facial features of his subjects. Carolin Brown, Shreveport, LACarolin was born into a prominent artistic Shreveport family. From an early age, she was painting and producing art. Carolin enjoys working in a variety of mediums – watercolor, acrylic, oil and mixed media. Though she has struggled with mental health challenges, she continues to paint and express her views through art. Her paintings are varied in subjects and themes. She is prolific and spontaneous. Her works range in subject matter, from children's book illustrations to the tortured. Her use of line is lively and inventive. Carolin's art work is for sale, available for loan or lease. (shown in picture) Leo Lee, Shreveport, LALeo is a self-taught artist who is particularly involved with pencil renderings and unsophisticated sculptures made of Popsicle sticks and paper. Though cognitively challenged, he is a prolific artist. Leo is inspired by people and places such as his drawing of "Ladies on a bus with hats". He is also inspired by famous faces such as Einstein and Geronimo.

BODIES REVEALED exposes the secrets of the human body in unprecedented detail normally reserved for medical professionals. Visitors of all ages can look deep inside the carefully preserved specimens, learn about human anatomy and see the effects that disease and unhealthy lifestyles have on the body. The Exhibition, presented by Premier Exhibitions, the Atlanta-based provider of major museum quality touring exhibitions including Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition and Dialog in the Dark, will be on display at Sci-Port: Louisiana's Science Center through May 2012. BODIES REVEALED, located inside Sci-Port, takes visitors through a series of galleries providing an up-close look inside the skeletal, muscular, reproductive, respiratory, circulatory and other systems of the human body. Many of the full-body specimens are dissected in vivid athletic poses, allowing visitors to relate to everyday activities. In addition, a multitude of organs are displayed to illustrate the damage that can result from over-eating, lack of exercise and smoking, and provides comparisons more powerful than any textbook could illustrate. The human body specimens in the Exhibition are preserved through a revolutionary technique called polymer preservation. In this process, human tissue is permanently preserved using liquid silicone rubber that is treated and hardened. The end result is a rubberized specimen, preserved to the cellular level, showcasing the complexity of the body's many bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs. The full-body specimens can take more than a year to prepare.

A 1950s baseball fanatic trades his soul to the Devil for a chance to lead his favorite team in the pennant race against The New York yankees. As young baseball sensation, Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life (and wife) he's left at home. With the help of a handy escape clause and a guilt-ridden temptress named Lola, Joe outsmarts the Devil, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to the World Series. Filled with hit songs like ''Whatever Lola Wants'' and ''You Gotta Have Heart'', DAMN YANKEES hit 7 Tony Award winning home runs, including Best Musical!

Shreve Memorial Library presents Author Colonel Richard "Dick" Toliver Retired Air Force Colonel Richard "Dick" Toliver is returning to Shreveport/Bossier City on February 25th through March 2, 2011 to conduct speaking and book signing events for his new book, "AN UNCAGED EAGLE." Colonel Toliver was born in Bellevue, LA, and is a 1957 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Shreveport. Colonel Toliver is the brother of Mrs. Zella Toliver Rye and the late Anthony Rye, Jr., retired educators in Caddo Parish. He will be speaking at Shreve Memorial Library Hamilton/South Caddo Branch, located at 2111 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, on Sunday, February 27, 2011, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. About the Book "AN UNCAGED EAGLE" is an inspirational memoir of Colonel Toliver's life that covers a 65-year period. It begins with his family's escape from the Ku Klux Klan in the backwoods of northwest Louisiana in 1942. The story covers his boyhood days on dirt streets, and outside privies in Shreveport, to eventually dining with the future king of Saudi Arabia. It is a story of the youngster who earned three dollars a week on his first job, and ended up working for billionaire Ross Perot. It chronicles a 26-year Air Force career that included 446 combat missions in Southeast Asia; a lightning strike at 20,000 feet; a rocket-seat ejection over Germany; and a special assignment that had international ramifications. About the Author Following his Air Force career, Colonel Toliver and his wife, Peggy, retired to Albuquerque, New Mexico for fourteen years, before moving to Arizona in 2003. While residing in New Mexico, he was recruited by Ross Perot's United We Stand America, and became a national advocate for education, economic, and government reform. He organized the state of New Mexico into an effective political voice and served as the State's Executive Director and Southwest Regional Director of twelve states for three years.

A band created from the New Orleans, LA underground, the seedy and humid streets of the music city seep into the sounds of the band known as TORPEDO TEARDROPS. Although they have not followed suit with the musical quest of NOLA luminaries such as The Neville Brothers , Dr. John or Galactic, the band has chosen to go their own way. They, instead, follow the path set forth by influences such as FLEETWOOD MAC and ethereal rockmeisters (if you can categorize their sound?) COCTEAU TWINS with the Fuzz of THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN. Lead singer Dalhia Teardrop has been a longtime fan of Siouxsie and the Banshees and has the vocal timidness of Kim Deal (The Pixies). Her along with guitarist and principle songwriter FUZZY TEARDROP have created their own personal plain of musical chaotical beauty!!

With his whiskey-and-cigarette voice, Jerry Jeff Walker embodied the era during the mid-1960s when pop, folk, and country music collided. His companions in those days were the "outlaws" of Nashville, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, and other singersongwriters such as Jimmy Buffet. Walker was a mainstay of the Austin sound, or progressive country, which became a worldwide commercial success in the 1980s. In the 1990s the gravelly voiced singer could still slide a ballad across a country dance hall or college auditorium. Walker's most popular song was the semisweet "Mr. Bojangles," a fable about a brief stay in a New Orleans jail.

The Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet announces a special community outreach performance of the short ballet Peter and the Wolf, with music by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. Peter and the Wolf tells the story of a young boy and a particularly adventurous day in the forest. It was composed in order to teach young children about instruments and orchestration: each character in the story is connected to a particular instrument and has its own musical theme, or leitmotif. Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet's Senior Apprentice Company will headline Peter and the Wolf, and the corps de ballet includes other members of SMB's Senior and Junior Companies. The ballet has been choreographed by SMB Artistic Director Kendra Meiki. General Admission tickets are $10 for adults (13 and above) and FREE for all patrons 12 and under. This MSB will take Charmed Madness to a new level with live music in a venue unlike any other in town - our very own Shamrock-and-Roll Space Dome! But watch out for one mischievous leprechaun as he pulls pranks on those who don't spend all of their gold and green on our silent auction!
